Hey Marellus,
The even broader question of whether religion will continue to exist is a fascinating one. If society has a big material fall (due to war, pestilence, depression or whatever) then I think its odds of surviving increase.
If, however, the material prosperity of the world continues as it is or especially if it increases that the scientific and rational method of looking at things will continue to spread–I’m not saying that society or even scientists themselves actually apply science, logic and philosophy in a fair or non-fallacious way, just that it may gradually spread–then I think that many of the logically self-contradicting claims of many religions will be exposed. I think this, in and of itself, is a good thing.
Now, I think that better and more internally consistent (meaning not self-contradictory) and externally consistent (meaning, in agreement with what limited scientific data we have) religions may emerge–namely, in agreement with the limited statements non-extrapolated and non-exaggerated science can say about the universe, free of internal contradictions, and then faith-based or revelation-based “religion” (assuming there actually is some kind of spiritual, divine or supernatural realm that reveals itself to humanity) to deal with the many issues that aren’t scientifically answerable now (or ever).
